Connecting the Past, Present, and Future

I grew up listening to my grandmother’s stories, such as how, in the mid-1920s, she rode Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad from Indiana to Miami, chasing love and adventure.

At just 19 years old, she traveled alone—an act considered scandalous at the time! The man waiting for her at the Miami Depot? My grandfather. Together, they built a life as early South Florida pioneers.

Years later, my mother at a similar age followed a similar path, driving down from New York to forge her own journey—one that led her to become Mayor of Coral Gables. Their stories shaped me, fueling my own adventurous spirit as I set out alone to become a television news reporter, later transitioning into a career as a video producer, playwright, and philanthropist.

We often study world history, but the most profound history is personal. The stories of those who came before us are woven into who we are. Understanding our own narrative within the broader historical context deepens our sense of identity and purpose.

Whether I’m writing a play, producing a documentary, or championing an important cause, storytelling is at the heart of everything I do. It’s how we connect, inspire, and create lasting impact. Just as it has been since the beginning of time.

I wrote Greetings from Paradise, a stage play inspired by my grandparents, Lucy and Robert Thomson, and their journey to South Florida in the early days of Miami and Coral Gables. Their story is woven into the larger-than-life history of the dreamers and builders who shaped the cities we know today.

The play brings to life figures like George Merrick, Carl Fisher, and Edward “Doc” Dammers, alongside my grandparents, highlighting the ambition, resilience, and vision that defined an era.

The Power of Storytelling to Inform and Inspire

Storytelling, journalism, and video production have always been my tools for shedding light on important issues because an informed society is a stronger society.

In 2018, I used nothing but my iPhone to produce a video exposing the deplorable conditions of my former high school. The response was immediate. That video sparked action, leading to the formation of Friends of Gables High, a dedicated group of alumni and community leaders committed to preserving and improving Coral Gables High School.

Socrates was right: A healthy democracy depends on an educated public. For over 140 years, free public education has been a pillar of American democracy. But today, as funding is increasingly redirected to charter and private school vouchers, the future of our traditional public schools and the children they serve is at risk.
